Leaseback or Auto Pawn - Which Is Better for You?
13.09.2026
Both leaseback and auto pawn let you get money using a car you already own as security, while keeping the right to use it. The main difference lies in how the financing is structured - who owns the car during the agreement, the term and conditions under which you repay the amount, and what additional options the financial provider offers.
Both products are a solution when you need money quickly - whether it's a dream opportunity you don't want to miss or an unexpected expense. In this blog, we'll explain in simple terms what the two services have in common and how they differ, and show you which one may be more beneficial in a specific situation.
What Are Auto Pawn and Leaseback?
Auto pawn is a service in which the customer uses their own car as collateral and quickly receives money in return. The right to use the car usually stays with the customer. Once the obligation is fully repaid, the restriction on the vehicle is lifted.
Leaseback, also known as sale-and-leaseback, is a model in which the customer sells their car to a leasing company, receives its market value in cash, and continues using the car under lease terms. During the agreement period, the car is legally registered in the company's name, but the customer keeps full driving rights. At the end of the term, once the obligation is fully repaid, ownership automatically returns to the customer.
In both cases, the scheme is based on the same principle: the financial provider gives you a lump sum against your car, you repay it in instalments, and you keep using the car the whole time. In neither case is there any restriction on how you spend the money.
How Do Leaseback and Auto Pawn Terms Differ?
Customers are most interested in the specific conditions: how much money they can get, over what term they repay it, who owns the car, and whether they can keep using it. Below, these parameters are compared in general terms, based on common practice in the Georgian market.

What Does Mogo Leaseback Offer?
With Mogo leaseback, your car is valued at its maximum market value and you can receive between GEL 1,000 and GEL 40,000. Repayment is spread over 3 to 84 months, the application takes just a few minutes to complete, and Mogo will contact you in about 20 minutes. There are no restrictions on how you spend the money.
In addition, Mogo offers an individual approach during repayment: if you get in touch in time, it may be possible to extend the term, defer a specific month's payment, or repay early. The key is that any arrangement takes into account the interests of both parties - Mogo and the customer.
When Is Leaseback Better, and When Is Auto Pawn?
The choice depends on what matters most to you - a longer term, everyday use of the car, keeping ownership, or a specific offer you already have.

Conclusion
Both leaseback and auto pawn can be a way to get financing when you need extra money to cover unexpected expenses and want to keep using your car at the same time. The main difference lies in the financing structure, the repayment term and flexibility. If you want a longer term, a flexible payment schedule and a guarantee that the car stays with you, leaseback is usually the more convenient choice. The final decision depends on how much money and what term you need, and which conditions suit you best.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are leaseback and a pawnshop the same thing?
No. Both let you get money secured by your car, but with leaseback the car temporarily becomes the property of the leasing company and returns to you at the end of the term, while auto pawn usually works on a pledge basis. The terms and additional conditions also differ.
Can I use a car that has been pawned?
It depends on the provider. Most auto pawn providers let you use the car while you receive the money. With Mogo leaseback, the car always stays in your use and is not held as a pledge.
When can leaseback be the better choice?
Leaseback is usually more beneficial when you need a long repayment term and a flexible payment schedule, and want to use the car without restrictions throughout the entire period.
What should I compare when choosing between leaseback and auto pawn?
Compare the main parameters: the maximum amount, repayment term, use of the car and flexibility of the payment schedule. Comparing these factors will show you which option better fits your needs.
Is Mogo leaseback a pawnshop?
No. Mogo does not hold your car as a pledge - the car stays in your use. With leaseback, the car is registered in the leasing company's name during the agreement period and returns to you at the end of the term.
